A herringbone paver terrace and gas fire pit placed on the boundary of a golf course lot, with a mixed border framing the view rather than blocking it.

A borrowed view, kept open on purpose.

When the ground beyond your property line is a fairway, the job of the landscape is mostly to stay out of the way. The terrace is placed right at the edge and everything built on it is kept below eye level from a seated position.

The framework

The paving is laid in a herringbone pattern with a contrasting border to define the circle. The gas fire pit is built in cut stone with a wide cap, low and round so it does not interrupt the sight line.

Planting and finish

The border behind is planted in layers and in colour: purple leaved shrubs and hydrangea for mass, daylily and liriope at the front for seasonal colour, and a Japanese maple to anchor the far corner. It frames the view from the terrace without ever closing it.
