A dry-laid flagstone path connecting a raised deck to the patio, laid through layered beds of hosta, fern and hydrangea.
The route people already walked, made into part of the garden.
Between the deck stair and the patio there was a worn line across the lawn. The path follows it, but widens it into a planted bed so the walk itself becomes the reason to go that way.
The framework
Irregular flagstone is set individually and spaced for a natural stride, dry laid so the beds run right up to and between the stones rather than stopping at a hard edge.
Planting and finish
This is a shade bed and it is planted like one. Variegated hosta and fern hold the ground at the front, hydrangea and viburnum give height and mass behind, and hanging baskets on the deck rail carry the colour up. It is a good example of what the softscape side of the business is for: appropriate plants, chosen for the conditions they actually have to live in.
